Abstract
Soil tillage is an essential stage in crop cultivation aimed at improving soil physical properties to support optimal plant growth. The use of agricultural machinery, such as cultivators, provides an effective solution to enhance work efficiency compared to conventional methods. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of a mechanical weeder, specifically a steel claw-type quick cultivator, on dry land. The study was conducted at the Experimental Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Hasanuddin University. The method involved direct field testing by measuring several parameters, including working width, forward speed, land area, theoretical field capacity (TFC), effective field capacity (EFC), field efficiency, and fuel consumption. The results showed that the theoretical field capacity ranged from 0.089 to 0.140 ha/h, while the effective field capacity ranged from 0.054 to 0.087 ha/h. The field efficiency ranged from 60.90% to 61.82%, influenced by variations in land surface conditions. Fuel consumption remained relatively stable during operation. Overall, the steel claw-type quick cultivator is more optimally used for secondary tillage rather than primary tillage.
